Conductor : Michael Lloyd
• Nicolai : Merry Wives of Windsor Overture
• Schumann : Konzerstück for 4 horns
• Beethoven : Symphony No 5
Otto
Nicolai (1810-1849) became one of the few "one-hit wonders" among classical composers.
His final opera, The Merry Wives of Windsor, has become a repertory item,
and this tuneful and lighthearted overture is probably the only Nicolai music that most people have heard.
Schumann's
Konzertstück in F major for four horns and orchestra, Op. 86,
is one of the composer's most neglected works.
This is unfortunate because it is an inventive, compelling work that rewards repeated hearings.
The
Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1804–08.
This symphony is one of the most popular and best-known compositions in all of classical music,
and one of the most often played symphonies.
