Leominster District Community Association
Leominster District Community Association
was founded in 1982 in response to local need.
It's aim was to provide services lacking in Leominster and its immediate district,
where virtually no community work was being done.
Leominster Community Centre is the Association's main project housed in a former Victorian school
built by the Arkwright Family, Yorkshire mill owners,
on land formerly owned by the 7th century monastery near the Priory Church.
The Centre today provides four public rooms for hire at very affordable rates and offices for local charities, start-up businesses and those providing services for people with learning disabilities. Other LDCA projects in the Centre are: Leominster Natural Health Centre, a reprographic Resource Centre run by volunteers, a youth theatre company called Dizzy Dramas and a Gardening scheme in partnership with ECHO.
The Theatre, the Centre’s largest room, has modern lighting and sound systems, plus raked seating fit for any small theatre. It remains a varied community space with classes in Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates and Line Dancing. Theatre performance from youth/adult, amateur/professional is available several times a year.
The Hall, Art and Committee rooms are used for a variety of activities – programme available on request and training in ICT and ESOL are available for free. Approximately 800 people a week come to the Centre to enjoy leisure time or to use one of the many services on offer. Current tenants are Marches Family Network, Midland Heart, Voyage, a theatre skills teacher and a violin maker.
This Centre is unique.
